HMRC Glitch Stops Thousands from Topping Up State Pension Before Deadline

A technical error at HMRC locked thousands out of a chance to top up their State Pension via backdated National Insurance credits. The online system was shut early, just before a key deadline for making contributions for gaps between 2006 and 2018. About 21,000 people are affected and will be contacted to resolve the issue.

Thousands of pensioners, mostly married women, widows, and those over 80, are set to receive back payments of up to £11,905 after the DWP uncovered widespread underpayments. Nearly £417 million has already reached qualifying widows, with most remaining cases expected to be resolved before 2024 ends.
